Kitty Brightwell enlisted in the WAAF aged 18 and trained as a Plotter. She served at RAF Uxbridge and, during the Battle of Britain she was in the 11 Group Control Room under the command of Air Marshal Dowding. She braved the Blitz and remained in uniform until 1945, reaching the rank of LACW.
In later life, Kitty loved visiting local schools to tell the pupils of her wartime experiences. She became known to the RAF Association who arranged for a uniformed officer to attend her 90th birthday party and present her with a bouquet. RAFA also arranged for Kitty to visit RAF Boulmer where she met the modern airwomen and toured the station.
Kitty was an honorary member of The Association of Fighter Control Officers.
She was a little woman with a big heart who served her country in its time of need.
